good for what it is & price August 21, 2010 Heartwings (Maryland, USA) If you really wanna get ripped or do some serious muscle building, training for a sport or body sculpting, join a gym or buy a more pricey machine. If you're already in good shape & want to be even better, you don't need a Total Gym. If you want a rock hard 6 pack, this won't do that for most people. If you wanna get get rid of your gut & have a flat abdomen, this will do that. If you haven't been off the couch in a while and want to lose weight, build strength and shape up, this is a good machine to start with (and you can often find them cheap used). At the lowest settings it is easy enough for someone totally out of shape and it'll last you a good while as you can raise the incline to make it more challenging as you progress. You have the choice of more reps at a less challenging setting or fewer at a more challenging one. There are a lot of exercises you can do to target your problem areas and it is true that, even if you just get on this thing a couple times a week for 20 minutes or so, you will get some noticeable results. You may be happy w/ those results or eventually want more, that is up to you, but this is a great machine to get you off to a good start that won't cost you a fortune or be so hard you give up right away. I have had mine for years and it still works great as they are sturdy. After a lengthy illness, surgery, recovery & medication that caused weight gain, I found I had packed on about 30 pounds and looked like a potato. Being a lady over 50 and so out of shape, I needed to start gradually, so I got my Total Gym back out and it is perfect for me and really helping me to peel off those pounds and I know I look better as I am getting compliments and my clothes fit better and I can get rid of the bigger ones soon. I am also eating healthy, walking and using a Gazelle in place of or in additon to walking sometimes.
There are some down sides to the Total Gym. They make it look like it's real easy to fold up & put away under the bed and it is not. Unless you have a tall bed, it won't even fit. It is very heavy and takes some doing to get it flat and move it around- it's kind of like trying to move a dead body (not that I ever have, but you know what I mean!). It can also be hard sometimes to get those rods to fit thru the holes to change the settings- you gotta wiggle it & struggle w/ them. You pretty much have to be able to lift it, it does not move easily on carpet or a hard floor. You will like Total Gym better if you have an area where you can leave it set up most of the time, but it does take up a lot of space (length) when set up. If you are significantly overweight, you may find it uncomfortable as it is not real wide, but it's fine for me.
Depending on what you want, this may be the perfect machine for you!
Great results, highly recommended August 8, 2010 Susan B. (Bridgewater, NJ) I bought this product several years ago and it has been one of the best purchases I ever made. I try to use it 3-4 times a week and it has held up very well, so I would have to say that the quality of the product is excellent, especially for the money. Initially I had a difficult time removing the pulley in order to use the separate components like the pull-up bar, but after doing it several times it became much easier. Adjusting the height of the glideboard is really simple, and I actually use all the settings except for the highest one depending on the exercise that I am doing. I will admit that I don't use it much for lower body, but it rocks for an upper body workout. Love the fact that I can watch tv or listen to music while I'm doing this workout, and with the variety of exercises you can do on the Total Gym I usually find than an hour has flown by before I'm ready to quit. If you're thinking about buying it, just do it!
Better than I imagined July 13, 2010 Trant W Batey The total Gym is better than I imagined. It works really well, and gives a max resistance of 44% of you body weight.
It seemed a little daunting as I unpacked it, but I had it together and working in 20 minutes without much struggle.
It also stores easily, so don't worry about that. It takes about 1 minute to put away. The direction say to not store it upright, but I have the squat bar attached to the bottom which makes it very stable in the upright position.
It comes with the squat bar and a leg pulley, so that's nice as well.
This is the perfect workout device for a small apartment lifestyle.

I bought a Total Gym 1500 from Amazon over three years ago and have used it faithfully two or three times a week every since. I don't know what the difference is between the 1100 and the 1500 but they look the same, so I assume they are quite similar. We have dedicated a room of our home to also accommodate free weights (with dumbbells and barbell), weight bench and a recumbent bike, that we still prefer for some exercises. So, we don't use the Total Gym for all we could use it for, but we love it for several exercises. For "Pull Downs", I add a 25# plate to the sliding bench to provide extra weight.
We keep the unit set up so it's extra simple to use, especially since I do all of the exercises in the highest position. My wife uses a lower position, but she does her exercises in one position also. Changing the position (load) involves removing a pin, sliding the upper fitting up or down and replacing the pin, very simple. Motion of the Total Gym is very smooth, the handles are comfortable and allow a wide range of movement adding a lot of flexibility to the way you stress specific muscle groups.
Except for a small tear in the stitching of the bench cover that I carelessly did with a sharp belt buckle, the unit looks and functions like new in spite of the hard use we have given it!

Great item. Both my wife and I use this. We have it in the guest room and when anyone comes to stay it is really easy to fold up and move out of the way. The only problem we had was the hook to disconnect and change parts underneath was super hard (almost impossible) to unhook. We solve it by adding another hook and it works great now. I read in a couple other reviews that others had this problem too. Except for that one thing it was easy to put up and is a great workout.
