About Home Gyms
While offering the convenience of working out in the comfort and privacy of your own home, home gyms also allow you to focus on specific routines without having to wait in line or switch between a complex array of machines. In addition to improving strength, power, coordination, and muscular endurance, weight training can enhance weight reduction, enhance the immune and cardiovascular systems, and help prevent injuries. In general, home gym machines are compact units designed to strengthen and exercise many parts of the body. While no single home gym can provide a complete strength training solution, they are a convenient way to combine many exercises into a single unit. Some home gyms focus exclusively on upper-body workouts, while other, more advanced units focus on upper- and lower-body conditioning.

5 out of 5 stars Great Machine -- Great Price   November 27, 2009

I was looking for something I could put in my home that would allow me to do some resistance training. After much debating, I opted to purchase this machine. I haven't been disappointed!

Lets start with the Price. I purchased this for $599 and opted for the free shipping. I feel that this product is a bargain at that price. I've looked into many other pieces of equipement that cost much more and did much less.

Assemble wasn't too bad. There are quite a few pieces in the box that need to be assembled. It looks a little overwhelming when you first open the box, however the assembly instruction manual is very thorough and easy to understand. If you have any experience putting things together (ie. Ready-to-assemble furniture or toys) this will be a snap.

The product is very sturdy. It is a little large, so make sure you have the space to put it. If you are looking to lift heavy amounts of weight, the only drawback to this model is it can't be upgraded with more weight. For me, the 210 lbs. was enough, but for others, it may not be.

Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars great price--great machine!   May 26, 2009
Robert J. Polk (Monroe, MI USA)
The Motivator 2 and very similar PR 1000 are great entry level machines. They have 210 pounds of resistance (power rods), and THEY CAN be upgraded to 310 pounds. Bowflex started covering the last 2 holes in the power rod box with 2 flaps of metal, to make customers but the newest entry level machine on their website. Simply bend those flaps straight up with a pipe wrench or crescent wrench before you install the power rod box. You can then order 2 50 pound power rods on the bowflex site for $99. They just screw in. Bowflex will say those machines can't be upgraded, and to try would void the warranty, but just don't tell them you did it. They are never going to come to your house. The price is great for what you get and it is easy to use. If you want the newest version on their site that is just like these two, you'll pay double. That probably isn't worth it. The exercises are very smooth and easy to do. This is probably the best home gym of its' size and price out there.

3 out of 5 stars Motivated by the Motivator   March 31, 2009

I am very pleased with the Bowflex Motivator 2. My daughter and son, both experienced weight lifters, have commented that the machine operates smoothly. My daughter likes low resistance with high reps, and my son and I like middle level resistance with high reps. The three of us each gets what we're looking for. On those ocassions where I want to test my metal, I'll go for high resistance and fewer reps. The machine handles this also.

There is the stabilization issue with the Motivator 2. I actually consider this a plus, although folks who like free weights have commented that they don't like it. As for me, I find that stabilizing the resistance requires use of the muscle fibers that control the more delicate movements. Therefore, I'm not only exercising the larger muscles, I'm also exercising different muscles at the very end of the movement, where delicate control really needs to take place.

My only real concern has been with the ankle strap. It doesn't fit snuggly and slips when doing the lateral leg extension. My son tells me that wearing real athletic shoes, instead of house slippers, solves this problem.

Overall, I'd recommend this product to the person who wants to firm up, tone up, shape up without going to a gym.
